We were called to the Museum of Life and Science after their maintenance team attempted to fix a 12×12 commercial door with a unique outside pickup and reverse torsion spring system. Following a YouTube video for a standard setup, they reassembled the drums and cables incorrectly and wound the springs in the wrong direction. The door was stuck wide open with no spring tension, creating both a safety and security hazard. We used a forklift to lower the door, corrected the drum placement and cable wrapping, and wound the springs properly toward ourselves – the opposite of standard systems.
One of the most common calls we get is for broken springs. A customer in Durham called because their door would only lift a few inches and then slam back down. We diagnosed a broken torsion spring and replaced both springs on their double door with high-cycle 25,000-cycle springs. They left the visit not only with a safe, working door but also with a 10-year spring warranty.
